[ it's been a few weeks in graceside academy, and misaki has gotten used to murder being a part of their weekly routine by now. it was a somber trial, with mako's execution having left a sour taste in her mouth. she knows that katniss and mako were really close, and that katniss probably wasn't holding up as well as she would've liked people to think she was.
after the execution, misaki tries to find katniss at the afterparty. it's never really a party. just a gathering to remember those they'd lost, and to mourn.
when she runs into katniss, misaki offers her some curry that one of the other captives had cooked up for them. ]
[ she's a sharp one, that's for sure. for once, katniss isn't checking on the people she's closest to. she's sort of huddled in a corner, mako's scarf in her hands. it is-- was important to him, she knows, and she has to keep it safe. has to keep it close. because if she doesn't, who will?
it takes her a moment to hear misaki. she smells the food and looks up, and her eyes look a little unfocused, a little red. like she's been crying, but she's trying hard to conceal that. there may be no cameras here, but she's still very much in the mindset of having to put on a mask. ]
... You can just call me Katniss, [ she mumbles, and she reluctantly lets the scarf fall into her lap in order to take the plate. ]
[ that was sudden--she and katniss, in misaki's eyes, were familiar with one another but were not as close as she and mako were. for misaki, calling katniss by her first name... ]
...Katniss-san, then...?
[ she sounds Unsure about this, but more importantly: ]
[ there's a tiny bit of discomfort there. far as she can tell, -san is a respect thing, and... well. she might be wrong, but she's just. katniss. nothing and no one special, despite what her memories tell her. ]
... I should've punched him before he went and got himself executed.
[ she's bitter. she's angry. but more than anything she's sad. so sad and tired of seeing friend after friend die. so tired of everything, she just wants to sleep for a thousand years and never ever wake up. ]
[ that is...a strange thing she'll have to get used to. but in katniss' time of mourning, misaki figures that she'd better just listen to what she says for today. she'll go back to using '-san' subconsciously again. eventually. ]
Ah... That would have been an appropriate goodbye from you.
[ even though it wasn't his fault. in the end, mako had only acted out of self-defense. truthfully, riku should've known better before getting himself killed by mako's hand, and misaki holds some resentment for him because of that. she was never too close to either of them, but seeing katniss' pain makes her hurt, too. ]
I'll get a glass of water for you as well. Stay here.
Yeah. Instead, I yelled at him. And in return I got an apology and a scarf.
[ riku. right. they'd butted heads one too many times--no wonder katniss had been suspected from the start. she hadn't exactly made a secret of that fact; but... she hadn't wanted riku dead. there's no one here katniss wants--or wanted--to see dead (aside from maybe walter, because fuck that guy).
then again... maybe she and riku hadn't gotten along well because they were similar. huh. just like her and haymitch all over again... ]
... thanks, Misaki.
[ she sounds so tired. misaki's absence will, at least, result in her dwelling on the trial. how they'd hurled accusations at her. how, when things got too heated, mako had stepped in. how he'd defended her.
katniss clutches the plate so tight her knuckles turn white. ]
[ misaki hadn't exactly liked riku, either. in her eyes, he had a weird sense of justice, a strange way of differentiating right from wrong. misaki is firm, feet planted in the ground firm, about her morals and perhaps that is one of her weaknesses but--at least katniss wasn't obnoxious about it. that's probably why they get along. ]
Here you are.
[ she presents katniss with a glass of water, straight from the tap. ]
That scarf from Mako-san was important to him, wasn't it? He left you with the most important thing he had left... That's how close you two were.
[ by the time misaki returns, katniss has eaten at least a few bites. it's good. it's even better than the stuff they make in the capitol, somehow. maybe it's because the people here give a damn, and it shows. and she's grateful for it, she just... doesn't know how to show it other than with a thank you.
she's stroking the scarf idly, and it take her a moment to take the glass. to pull her hand away from the material. it's therapeutic, the shift of her fingers against the red, and she nods. her face crumples up a bit, and she has to take another moment. tell herself to take a sip of water.
it helps soothe her throat, at least. ]
... yeah. We were... a lot alike, but not in an obnoxious way. [ they'd had stupid arguments, but who doesn't? katniss takes another sip of water. ] We both practically raised our siblings. He was a firebender. I'm the Girl on Fire.
[ she listens to katniss speak, and there's a poignant sadness that settles in her heart. the bonds that people make here are so fragile--that realization is just starting to settle in. anyone could go at any moment. and while some of the others here have become accustomed, perhaps desensitized to murder itself, this is new territory for misaki. one she would have never expected to cross in her life. and yet, here we are. ]
You both had an incredibly strong bond, didn't you? [ a faint smile. ] That scarf...it must have been his way of trying to keep it and transcend the afterlife. Such a sentiment...it's hard to think about, and yet...
[ misaki shakes her head. ] Aah, I'm not making much sense, am I? [ she scratches the back of her head. ]
